Scout Coffee's Foothill room is at 880 Foothill Boulevard, in University Square just outside the Cal Poly campus, and it posts hours of 6:30 am to 6:30 pm every day. A short way away, on the campus itself, Scout's Cal Poly room sits in the yakʔitʸutʸu neighborhood next to the Cal Poly Welcome Center, operated by Cal Poly Campus Dining, with hours that follow the academic calendar.

Those two addresses shape coffee on the north side of San Luis Obispo in a way the downtown blocks do not. Downtown hours follow the week. Campus hours follow the semester, and this fall that calendar is new: Cal Poly began its first semester in August 2026 after years on quarters. For a student, a parent on a campus tour, or a new faculty member, knowing which room keeps which schedule saves a wasted walk.

This page covers Foothill Boulevard and University Square, the campus room at yakʔitʸutʸu, the fall 2026 calendar dates that move the campus schedule, and what student writers have said about coffee in the city. San Luis Obispo is a city of 48,039 people by the most recent American Community Survey five year estimate, and a large share of its daily coffee traffic runs through this side of town.

Foothill Boulevard and University Square

University Square is the shopping center on Foothill Boulevard just outside the Cal Poly campus, and Scout's Foothill room is at 880 Foothill Boulevard inside it. Scout calls it its second cafe and describes a large parking lot, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and mountain views from the patio.

The posted hours are simple: 6:30 am to 6:30 pm, every day. That consistency is what makes Foothill useful on this side of town. It does not change with the academic calendar, and it keeps the same schedule on a Saturday in July as on a Tuesday in October.

The parking lot matters more than it might seem. Downtown, Scout's Garden Street page points drivers to metered streets and the garage off Marsh Street. At University Square, a visitor pulling off Foothill has a lot right there, which makes 880 Foothill the easy stop for a parent picking up a student or a family arriving for a campus visit.

The Campus Room at yakʔitʸutʸu

Scout's Cal Poly room is on campus in the yakʔitʸutʸu neighborhood, next to the Cal Poly Welcome Center, with a campus mailing address of San Luis Obispo, CA 93407. Scout describes it as a licensed location operated by Cal Poly Campus Dining, also serving its coffee, on campus.

Because Campus Dining runs it, the campus room keeps Campus Dining's schedule. Scout's own page says its hours follow the academic calendar and change through the year, and it tells visitors to check the campus dining hours before they go. That is the single most useful thing to know about this address: the door is on campus time, not city time.

Inside Cal Poly announced the room on April 28, 2021, ahead of a fall 2021 opening. Mustang News covered the same news on May 4, 2021, placing the new room next to the Welcome Center in yakʔitʸutʸu. The Welcome Center location makes it a natural first stop for anyone arriving on campus for a tour or an orientation.

What the Campus Room Serves

The 2021 coverage gives a clear picture of the campus menu. Inside Cal Poly listed scratch made pastries alongside the coffee, including morning buns, muffins, scones, croissants, shortbread, chia pudding, Liege waffles and buttermilk biscuits.

Mustang News added that the campus room would carry items exclusive to the Cal Poly location, with more substantial options such as avocado toast, a fruit and yogurt parfait, chia pudding, Liege waffles, and a buttermilk biscuit with salted honey butter and jam.

Inside Cal Poly also gathered some of the praise Scout's coffee has drawn: it noted that Alton Brown of the Food Network called it scientifically perfect, and that the coffee had been featured in The New York Times, Sunset Magazine and The Guardian. A student quoted by Mustang News said Scout creates a certain vibe that makes her feel motivated to get work done, and that she was stoked about the convenience of having one on campus.

The Fall 2026 Calendar, Date by Date

Because the campus room follows the academic calendar, the Cal Poly registrar's fall 2026 dates are the best planning tool for anyone counting on it. The fall semester's first day of classes was Monday, August 24, 2026.

The holidays that follow are Labor Day on Monday, September 7, and Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11. Fall Break runs Monday, November 23 through Friday, November 27, with the campus closed on the Thursday and Friday of that week.

The last day of classes is Friday, December 11, and final exams run Saturday, December 12, then Monday, December 14 through Friday, December 18.

For anyone planning a coffee around those dates, the rule of thumb is simple. During the weeks of classes, the campus room keeps its term schedule, set by Campus Dining. Around Fall Break, the end of finals and the winter break, check the campus dining hours first, and treat 880 Foothill Boulevard, open 6:30 am to 6:30 pm every day, as the steady option nearby.

Cal Poly's First Semester

This fall is a turning point for the campus calendar. Cal Poly's semester conversion pages explain that the California State University system told Cal Poly in fall 2021 that it was expected to move to semesters by fall 2025, a deadline later extended to fall 2026. Cal Poly had been the only one of the CSU's 23 campuses still on quarters.

Fall 2026 is the result: the first semester began in August, with classes starting August 24. For coffee on the Cal Poly side of town, that means a new rhythm. Terms are longer, breaks fall at different points, and anyone who learned the old quarter calendar should not assume the campus room keeps the schedule it kept a year ago.

The steady part of the map is off campus. University Square does not follow the semester, and 880 Foothill Boulevard keeps its daily 6:30 am to 6:30 pm hours whether classes are in session or not.

What Student Writers Say About SLO Coffee

Mustang News, Cal Poly's student news outlet, published a student's guide to Central Coast coffee shops on February 2, 2026, and it is a good window into where students actually go. The guide ranges across the city and beyond it, from downtown cafes to shops in other Central Coast towns.

Among its San Luis Obispo picks, the writer said of Nautical Bean that their coffee is amazing, praised Joebella's matcha, and wrote of Kreuzberg that she loved the plants and the dark academia color scheme. The same guide appeared on the first page for the plain search coffee shop San Luis Obispo CA on September 15, 2026.

Nautical Bean describes its Parker Street location as a college student favorite, and it keeps two locations in San Luis Obispo besides its South Higuera location: Los Osos Valley Road and Parker Street, each posting 6 am to 4 pm on weekdays and 7 am to 4 pm on weekends. For a student with a car, those locations and the downtown blocks are part of the same weekly map as Foothill Boulevard.

The Rest of Fall 2026, Week by Week

From late September, the rest of the fall term is easy to map. Classes run through October without a registrar holiday, so the campus room keeps its term schedule through the month, and 880 Foothill Boulevard keeps its 6:30 am to 6:30 pm day alongside it.

November brings the first breaks in that rhythm. Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, and Fall Break covers the full week of November 23 through 27, with the campus closed on Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27. Those are the weeks to check the campus dining hours before walking to the Welcome Center.

December is finals season. Classes end on Friday, December 11, and exams run on Saturday, December 12 and then Monday, December 14 through Friday, December 18. For a student studying late into finals week, the posted hours at Foothill, 6:30 am to 6:30 pm, and the downtown evening hours on Higuera and Garden Street are the ones to plan around.

The Student Guide's Downtown Picks

The February 2, 2026 Mustang News guide also sends students downtown. It wrote of Field Day that the coffee itself is incredible; Field Day is at 1185 Monterey Street in the Mill Street Historic District, open every day from 7 am until 6 pm. It also named Linnaea's Cafe, at 1110 Garden Street, which posts hours until 8 pm from Wednesday through Sunday.

For a Cal Poly student, that makes the city's coffee map a loop rather than a single stop: Foothill Boulevard and the campus room on weekdays between classes, and Monterey, Higuera and Garden Street on the evenings and weekends when there is time to go downtown.

For Parents and Campus Visitors

A campus visit tends to start at the Welcome Center, and the campus room next to it is the closest coffee to that starting point. On days when the campus room keeps shorter hours, University Square on Foothill Boulevard is the nearby alternative, with parking and patio seating.

For a family staying the weekend, the pattern is easy to follow. A morning coffee at 880 Foothill before a tour, a walk from the Welcome Center if the campus room is open, then an afternoon downtown on Higuera and Garden Street, where Scout's Garden Street room at 1130 Garden Street keeps the same 6:30 am to 6:30 pm schedule as Foothill.

Move in weekends, orientation days and commencement all bring visitors who do not know the city yet. The most useful thing a coffee room on this side of town can tell them is where it is, which parking to use, and whether its hours follow the campus calendar or the ordinary week.

Beyond the Cal Poly Side

The rest of the city's coffee gets its own pages in Hillcane's other posts on this city. Downtown Higuera and Garden Street cover the cafes from 311 Higuera to 1130 Garden Street, with hours that run from 6:30 am to midnight on weekends. South Higuera, the SLO Public Market at Tank Farm Road and Laurel Lane cover the south and east sides. Monterey Street and the Mill Street Historic District get their own treatment.

Scout's fourth location, at 390 Morro Bay Boulevard, is in Morro Bay, a separate city on the coast, and it is not part of the San Luis Obispo map. Scout's locations page counts three cafes in San Luis Obispo County plus the licensed campus location: Foothill and Garden Street in the city, Morro Bay on the coast, and the campus cafe on campus time.

Does a coffee shop near Cal Poly need its own page?

It helps. Students, parents and campus visitors plan around the academic calendar, Fall Break, finals week and move in weekends, and many of them do not know the city yet. A page that states the street, the parking, the posted hours and how they relate to the campus calendar answers that. Hillcane builds them at hillcane.co/contact or (256) 384-2449.
