What is schema markup?

Schema markup is a small, structured block of code added to a webpage that tells a search engine or AI system exactly what kind of thing the page describes, in a machine readable format rather than requiring the system to guess from the visible text. For a coffee shop, the type that matters most is CafeOrCoffeeShop, or the more general LocalBusiness, placed on the page describing the physical room, its address, phone number, and hours.

Does a coffee shop need CafeOrCoffeeShop specifically, or is LocalBusiness enough?

Either works. CafeOrCoffeeShop is the more specific type, and LocalBusiness is a broader but still acceptable category. What matters most is that the markup is cafe specific instead of generic Organization or WebSite markup alone, and that it sits on the page describing the physical room. In the September 15, 2026 count of 1,109 shops, 337 had proper markup of this kind in place.

What is FAQPage schema and why does it need to match visible copy?

FAQPage schema marks up question and answer content so it can be eligible for display in search results. It only works correctly when every question and answer already appears as visible, readable text on that same page. Schema describing content a visitor cannot see is not a substitute for visible copy and can create a mismatch a search engine is likely to distrust, so the visible questions and the markup should match one to one.

How do you check if a site has schema?

Use a free JSON LD viewer or a Rich Results style testing tool, paste in the URL of the page describing your shop's physical location, and read what structured data exists. Check that specific page, not just the homepage, since schema can exist on one page and be missing from another. If the tool shows CafeOrCoffeeShop or LocalBusiness with your correct name, address, and hours, you are in the roughly 30 percent of shops with it in place.

Does Wix, Squarespace, or Shopify add this automatically?

Not reliably. Wix, Squarespace, and Shopify do not add cafe specific schema by default without customization. In the Southeast's 201 shop sample, all 28 shops on Square Online had no schema at all, while present schema concentrated on Squarespace, 42 of the 60 present cases, and Wix, 12 of 60. That reflects customization on those sites, not proof that any platform is better.

What's the difference between Organization and LocalBusiness schema?

Organization schema describes a business generically: it tells a search engine that a business exists and has a website, without confirming it is a physical, local coffee shop with a specific address and hours. LocalBusiness, or the more specific CafeOrCoffeeShop, does exactly that. In the September 15, 2026 count, 367 of 1,109 shops had only generic markup, which is a weaker signal.

Can a shop have schema and still not rank?

Yes. Proper schema does not by itself guarantee a better ranking or an AI citation. A shop can have fully correct CafeOrCoffeeShop markup and still lose a best coffee shop in my city search to a tourism board page or a review platform, because ranking and citation depend on many factors together. What schema gives a search engine or AI system is a clear, machine readable answer to what kind of business this is, and where.

How long does it take to add?

For someone with basic web development experience, adding correct CafeOrCoffeeShop schema to a single room URL is typically a small, well defined, one time task, not an extended project. Framing the request that narrowly, with the exact fields to include, tends to help a busy owner get it prioritized. Those fields are business name, street address, locality, postal code, telephone number, opening hours, and a url.

Is this a one time fix?

Largely yes. Schema is fundamentally a one time install: once CafeOrCoffeeShop or LocalBusiness markup is correctly on the room's own URL, it does not need redoing unless the business moves, hours change permanently, or a theme or platform change resets it. A redesign can strip existing markup without anyone noticing, so a quick recheck with the same free testing tool after any significant site change is a simple habit.

What should an owner ask a developer for exactly?

Ask for JSON LD CafeOrCoffeeShop or LocalBusiness schema on the page describing your physical room, including the business name, street address, locality, postal code, telephone number, opening hours, and a url field pointing back to that same page. JSON LD is the format search engines currently expect. If FAQPage schema is also wanted, ask that every question and answer appear as visible text on the same page.
