Cross the Columbia River from downtown Wenatchee and you leave one city and one county for another. East Wenatchee is a separate city in Douglas County, with 14,114 people in the 2023 American Community Survey five year estimates. Wenatchee, on the west bank, is the Chelan County seat with 35,502. Those two numbers are never added together in anything I write about Wenatchee coffee.

The east bank has its own coffee geography. A Dutch Bros drive thru sits at 685 Grant Rd, East Wenatchee, WA 98802. Farther out, near Pangborn Memorial Airport, the Trades District holds a cluster of small businesses, among them Sekawan Coffee at 668 S Augustin Lp, East Wenatchee, WA 98802.

This piece is the geography post for that side of the river. It covers how East Wenatchee became a city, how the bridges connect it to Wenatchee, what sits along Grant Road and around the airport, and why a search typed on one bank should not be read as an answer about the other.

Two Cities, Two Counties

The Columbia River does more than separate two downtowns. It separates two counties. Wenatchee is the county seat of Chelan County, at the confluence of the Columbia and Wenatchee rivers. East Wenatchee sits on the east shore of the Columbia, directly opposite, in Douglas County.

The populations are separate too. The 2023 ACS five year estimates put Wenatchee city at 35,502 people and East Wenatchee at 14,114. Census Reporter's newer 2024 five year profile shows East Wenatchee at 14,199 people on about 3.8 square miles of land, a density of about 3,747.4 people per square mile, with a median age of 35.4. That later figure comes from a different survey window, so the 2023 pair stays the matched comparison.

East Wenatchee is about four tenths the size of Wenatchee by population, and it is packed tightly. Its land area is a fraction of Wenatchee's 10.58 square miles of land, so the east bank's homes, shops and roads sit close together.

For coffee, the rule is simple. A cafe or stand with an East Wenatchee address belongs to East Wenatchee. It does not raise Wenatchee's count, and Wenatchee's downtown cafes do not raise East Wenatchee's. A county line running down the middle of a river is about as clear a boundary as geography offers.

How East Wenatchee Became a City

East Wenatchee is a younger city than its neighbor, and its start was close. According to Wikipedia's history of the city, residents voted on February 28, 1935 to incorporate the town of East Wenatchee, 48 in favor and 46 against. The incorporation became official on March 11, 1935.

Two votes decided that East Wenatchee would govern itself rather than stay an unincorporated community across the river. That narrow margin is part of why the city line matters. East Wenatchee chose to be its own place, and it has kept its own city government since.

The city grew steadily from there. The 2010 census counted 13,190 residents, and the 2020 census counted 14,158, an increase of about 7.3 percent. The ACS estimates since then place it a little above 14,000.

The regional economy on both banks rests on fruit orchards, with apples, sweet cherries and pears as the main commercial crops, and Wenatchee itself carries the nickname Apple Capital of the World. East Wenatchee shares that orchard country, but it adds retail of its own, including the Wenatchee Valley Mall, which sits on the east bank despite the name.

Crossing the Columbia

Three bridges link the two cities. The Richard Odabashian Bridge and the Senator George Sellar Bridge carry vehicles across the Columbia, and the historic Old Wenatchee Bridge carries pedestrians. Each crossing is a move from Chelan County to Douglas County, or back.

The Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail ties the banks together for people on foot and on bikes. It runs about 10 miles along both sides of the river and is used year round by cyclists, walkers, joggers and skaters. A loop that crosses the river twice is a good reminder that the two cities are neighbors, even if they are not one place.

The elevations differ a little as well. Wenatchee sits at about 715 feet, and East Wenatchee sits at about 846 feet, rising from the river toward the hills to the east.

For a coffee drinker on the trail, the practical question is which bank you are on when you stop. A cup on the west bank is a Wenatchee cup. A cup on the east bank, near Grant Road or out by the airport, is an East Wenatchee cup. The trail makes it easy to forget, and the address makes it easy to check.

Grant Road and the Chain Stand

Grant Road carries East Wenatchee's chain drive thru. Dutch Bros prints its East Wenatchee stand at 685 Grant Rd., East Wenatchee, WA 98802, with posted hours of 4:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.

The chain's own locator keeps the two cities apart. It lists one location in East Wenatchee, at 685 Grant Rd, and three in Wenatchee, at 1026 N. Miller, 739 S Mission Street and 106 Easy Way. The Washington state locator prints the cities separately as well, with East Wenatchee at one and Wenatchee at three.

That split is the cleanest example of how to count this valley. Four stands serve the two cities, but they are not four Wenatchee stands. Three are in Chelan County on the west bank and one is in Douglas County on the east bank.

Grant Road also points the way to the airport. The Chelan Douglas Regional Port Authority directs visitors to the Trades District by heading north on Grant Road toward Pangborn Memorial Airport, so the chain stand and the Trades District sit on the same route out of town.

Pangborn and a Famous Landing

Pangborn Memorial Airport sits in Douglas County, about four miles east of Wenatchee. It is owned by the Ports of Chelan and Douglas Counties, covers 665 acres at an elevation of about 1,249 feet, and has a single operating runway measuring 7,000 by 150 feet. Alaska Airlines provides scheduled service to Seattle, and Wikipedia reports added service to Portland, Oregon starting October 3, 2026.

The airport's name carries one of the best stories in the valley. The City of East Wenatchee recounts that at a few minutes after seven on the morning of October 5, 1931, a red Bellanca called Miss Veedol flew in low over the hills and settled into a nearly perfect belly landing in East Wenatchee.

Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon Jr. had taken off from Sabishiro Beach in Japan 41 hours and 15 minutes earlier and flown almost 5,500 miles without stopping. It was the first nonstop flight across the Pacific Ocean. The red plane still appears on the city's logo, and East Wenatchee keeps a sister city relationship with Misawa, the Japanese city where the flight began.

For anyone mapping coffee on the east bank, the airport is the landmark that anchors the far end of town. A cup picked up near Pangborn is about as far into East Wenatchee as the coffee map goes.

The Trades District

The Trades District is a small business hub at the Pangborn Airport Business Park, built by the Chelan Douglas Regional Port Authority. The port gives its address as 676 S Billingsley Drive, East Wenatchee, WA 98802, and describes it as a purpose built space for entrepreneurs, makers and trades to launch and grow.

Local coverage describes the district as an eight acre site. Its first phase includes 10 buildings with 12 rentable units, 74 parking spaces, gathering spaces and an outdoor plaza linked by a central path. The port opened it with a ribbon cutting on August 20, 2025.

The tenants are a mix. The port's own page describes wineries, coffee shops, therapeutic services, a pizza restaurant, a bakery, a sign maker, mead production and creative studios. That variety makes the district a destination in its own right rather than a single stop.

Sekawan Coffee gives its address in the district as 668 S Augustin Lp, East Wenatchee, WA 98802. Visit Wenatchee, the valley's tourism bureau, prints the same street as 668 S Augustin Loop. Directions from town follow the port's route: north on Grant Road toward the airport, right onto S Union Ave, then left onto 7th Street SE.

Why the Two Counts Stay Apart

Every Wenatchee post in this series keeps a geography lock. Wenatchee is not Yakima, it is not Ellensburg and it is not Leavenworth. East Wenatchee belongs on that list too, because it is the neighbor most likely to get folded in by accident.

The mistake usually happens in a roundup. A list of coffee shops in Wenatchee pulls in every pin on a map centered on the river, and some of those pins sit in East Wenatchee. Then a population line gets written as if the two cities were one, and 35,502 quietly becomes a larger figure that no Census table prints for either city.

Keeping the counts apart is fairer to both. East Wenatchee's coffee stops deserve to be described as part of a real city with its own 1935 founding vote, its own county and its own airport story. Wenatchee's downtown cafes deserve a count that reflects what sits inside Wenatchee's own limits.

It also makes directions honest. Telling someone a coffee stop is in Wenatchee when it sits by Pangborn sends them across a bridge and into a different county. Saying East Wenatchee, and giving the street, gets them there.

What a Search From Either Bank Sees

A phone search for coffee near me draws a circle around the person holding the phone, and a circle drawn near the river easily spans both banks. The results can mix Wenatchee and East Wenatchee businesses in one list without labeling the city.

Hillcane's Wenatchee posts have already walked through what a coffee shop Wenatchee WA search returned in September 2026: a tourism bureau category page, community threads, review directories, a few local cafe pages and a map block of place results. That page draws from both sides of the river, which is useful for a drinker and misleading for anyone treating it as a Wenatchee census.

For a drinker, the fix is to read the city on each address. The 98802 zip appears on the East Wenatchee addresses in this piece, from Grant Road to the Trades District. The city name printed with the street is what places a stop on one bank or the other.

For a cafe owner on the east bank, the lesson is to say East Wenatchee everywhere. A listing that shortens the city to Wenatchee invites exactly the confusion that makes map users cross the wrong bridge and AI answers blend two cities into one.

Reading the River Line

The east bank's coffee map is short and clear once the river is treated as the line it is. The Dutch Bros stand at 685 Grant Rd opens at 4:45 a.m. every day. North along Grant Road, toward Pangborn, the Trades District holds its mix of small businesses, including Sekawan Coffee at 668 S Augustin Lp. All of it sits in Douglas County, in a city of 14,114 people that voted itself into existence by two votes in 1935.

Across the bridges, Wenatchee's own coffee runs along Wenatchee Avenue downtown and the Worthen Street edge, covered in the other posts in this series. Those are Chelan County addresses in a city of 35,502.

Two cities, two counties, two counts. Keep them apart, read the city on the address, and the valley's coffee makes sense on both sides of the Columbia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is East Wenatchee part of Wenatchee?

No. East Wenatchee is a separate city in Douglas County, on the east shore of the Columbia River. Wenatchee is the Chelan County seat on the west bank. The 2023 ACS five year estimates count 14,114 people in East Wenatchee and 35,502 in Wenatchee. A coffee stop with an East Wenatchee address belongs to East Wenatchee and never raises Wenatchee's own count.

When did East Wenatchee become a city?

Residents voted on February 28, 1935 to incorporate, 48 in favor and 46 against, and the incorporation became official on March 11, 1935. That two vote margin created a separate city government on the east bank. The 2010 census later counted 13,190 residents and the 2020 census counted 14,158, an increase of about 7.3 percent over the decade.

Where is the Dutch Bros in East Wenatchee?

Dutch Bros lists one East Wenatchee stand, at 685 Grant Rd., East Wenatchee, WA 98802, with posted hours of 4:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day. Its three Wenatchee stands, at 1026 N. Miller, 739 S Mission Street and 106 Easy Way, sit across the river in Chelan County. The chain's locator prints the two cities separately, one and three.

Where is Sekawan Coffee?

Sekawan Coffee gives its address as 668 S Augustin Lp, East Wenatchee, WA 98802, in the Trades District near Pangborn Memorial Airport. Visit Wenatchee prints the same street as 668 S Augustin Loop. The port's directions to the district run north on Grant Road toward the airport, right onto S Union Ave and left onto 7th Street SE.

What is the Trades District?

It is a small business hub at the Pangborn Airport Business Park, built by the Chelan Douglas Regional Port Authority at 676 S Billingsley Drive. Its first phase has 10 buildings with 12 rentable units and 74 parking spaces on an eight acre site, and it opened with a ribbon cutting on August 20, 2025. Tenants include wineries, coffee shops, a bakery and creative studios.

What happened at Pangborn in 1931?

On October 5, 1931, a few minutes after seven in the morning, Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon Jr. belly landed the red Bellanca Miss Veedol in East Wenatchee. They had flown almost 5,500 miles nonstop from Sabishiro Beach, Japan, in 41 hours and 15 minutes, the first nonstop flight across the Pacific. The airport now carries Pangborn's name.

How do I get from Wenatchee to East Wenatchee?

Three bridges cross the Columbia. The Richard Odabashian Bridge and the Senator George Sellar Bridge carry vehicles, and the historic Old Wenatchee Bridge carries pedestrians. The Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail runs about 10 miles along both banks for walkers and cyclists. Every crossing moves you between Chelan County and Douglas County, and between two separate city coffee counts.

Can I add East Wenatchee's population to Wenatchee's?

No. Wenatchee's 35,502 and East Wenatchee's 14,114 come from the same 2023 ACS survey but describe two cities in two counties. Adding them produces a number no Census table prints for either place. Census Reporter's newer 2024 profile shows East Wenatchee at 14,199 on about 3.8 square miles of land, still a separate figure for a separate city with its own 1935 incorporation.

Why do coffee searches mix the two cities?

A coffee near me search draws a circle around the phone, and near the river that circle spans both banks. Results can list Wenatchee and East Wenatchee businesses together without labeling the city. Reading the city name and the 98802 zip on East Wenatchee addresses, such as 685 Grant Rd and 668 S Augustin Lp, tells you which bank a stop is on.

How far is Pangborn Memorial Airport from Wenatchee?

Wikipedia places Pangborn Memorial Airport about four miles east of Wenatchee, in Douglas County. It covers 665 acres at about 1,249 feet of elevation and has one operating runway of 7,000 by 150 feet. The Trades District sits at the airport's business park, so a coffee stop there is at the far eastern end of East Wenatchee's coffee map.
