Helena, Montana's capital, counts 33,126 residents in the 2023 American Community Survey five year estimate. Its coffee houses on Cruse Avenue, Last Chance Gulch and Prospect Avenue get most of the attention, and the sister posts in this series cover them. But a good share of Helena's morning coffee is poured somewhere else: at bakery counters, where a cup comes alongside bread, pastries and a breakfast menu.

This post is about those counters. It names three Helena bakeries by address, gives the hours each one posts where it posts them, and places them on the city's map alongside a bookstore and the historic walking mall on Last Chance Gulch. It does not rank anyone, and it does not treat a bakery as a lesser kind of coffee stop. A bakery counter simply answers a different morning question than an espresso bar does.

For a visitor, the practical value is the same as any address guide: knowing which door opens when, and what sits nearby. For a Helena resident, it is a reminder that the city's coffee map is wider than its coffee houses.

Why Bakery Counters Belong on a Helena Coffee Map

In a city of 33,126 people, the line between a coffee shop and a bakery that pours coffee is not a line most people think about at 7 in the morning. They want a cup and something to eat, and a bakery counter gives them both. That is why the bakery cafe is one of the most common shapes a morning stop takes in small American capitals, and Helena is no exception.

Hillcane's closing Helena post counts Helena's coffee first independents and sets bakery first shops aside, because a count of espresso bars and a count of places that pour coffee answer different questions. This post takes up the other half. It does not add bakeries to that count. It simply puts them on the map, so a drinker who wants bread and coffee together knows where to go.

The three bakeries below sit on three different streets: South Park Avenue, Gallatin and North Rodney Street. None of them is on the walking mall itself, which is part of why they are easy to overlook on a first visit.

44 South Park Avenue: Park Avenue Bakery

Park Avenue Bakery is at 44 South Park Avenue, Helena, MT 59601, and its phone number is (406) 449 8424. The bakery describes itself as Helena's from scratch bakery for over 25 years, and as a European style bakery and eatery inspired by European patisseries.

Its own site says it serves delectable breads, desserts, breakfast, lunch and coffee made from the freshest, quality ingredients, and describes a commitment to artisanal methods and premium ingredients. It also takes custom cake orders, including wedding and special occasion cakes, and posts daily and monthly specials, such as a soup of the day, for anyone planning lunch.

The name carries the address. A visitor who remembers Park Avenue Bakery already knows the street, and the South in the street number tells them which side of town to head for.

Park Avenue Bakery's Posted Hours

Park Avenue Bakery posts its hours plainly: Monday through Saturday from 7:00 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening, and Sunday from 8:00 in the morning to 2:00 in the afternoon. That makes it a morning coffee stop six days a week from 7, and a Sunday stop from 8.

For a drinker, those hours mean a cup can come with breakfast, with lunch or with an afternoon pastry, since the counter stays open into the early evening on weekdays and Saturdays. The bakery also offers online ordering with in store pickup, and a phone line for anyone who would rather call ahead.

Because special closures for maintenance or holidays do happen at any bakery, the useful habit is to check the posted notice on the bakery's own page before a trip. The regular schedule above is the one posted as of late September 2026.

1324 Gallatin: Vanilla Bean Bakery and Cafe

Vanilla Bean Bakery and Cafe is at 1324 Gallatin, Helena, MT 59601, in what the bakery calls Helena's Historic Sixth Ward. Its phone number is (406) 443 2257. The bakery says it was started in November 2008, and that since then it has worked to become known for its start your day breakfast pastries, comforting lunches and delicious desserts for any occasion.

Coffee is a named part of that. The bakery describes a full coffee bar and a fresh, made to order coffee to start the day, whether a drinker wants it black or wants a vanilla latte triple shot with whip cream and sprinkles. It serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday, and it takes online orders for cakes, cupcakes, cookies, breakfast pastries and bars.

The Sixth Ward name is worth holding on to. It places the bakery in a historic neighborhood of its own rather than on the downtown walking mall, and it gives a visitor a landmark to ask about when they arrive.

Vanilla Bean's Hours and Breakfast Window

Vanilla Bean posts hours of Monday through Friday from 7 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon and Saturday from 7 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon, with no Sunday hours. Its breakfast menu is served from 7 to 11 in the morning, Monday through Friday, with some items, such as the breakfast sandwich and the breakfast skillet, available until 10:30.

Those hours shape the kind of visit that makes sense. A weekday morning is the fullest window, with the coffee bar open from 7 and breakfast running until 11. A Saturday visit is shorter, ending at 2. For online cake and pastry orders, the bakery asks for 72 business hours of notice and lists pickup times of 9 to 4 on weekdays and 9 to 2 on Saturday.

For a visitor, the simplest plan is a weekday morning: coffee from the bar, something from the breakfast menu, and a box of pastries to take along for the rest of the day.

201 N Rodney St: The Grateful Bread Bakery and Cafe

The Grateful Bread Bakery and Cafe is at 201 N Rodney St, Helena, MT 59601. Its name says what it is, a bakery and a cafe under one roof, and joe.coffee, the national coffee directory, lists it among Helena's independent coffee stops.

North Rodney Street gives Helena a third bakery address on a third street, separate from South Park Avenue and from Gallatin. For a drinker building a Helena morning around bread and coffee, that spread is useful: there is a bakery counter on each of three different streets, and a visitor can pick the one closest to where they are staying.

Its hours are not given here, so a visitor planning a trip is best served by calling ahead on the day.

331 N Last Chance Gulch: Montana Book Company

A bakery coffee walk in Helena pairs naturally with a bookstore on the Gulch. Montana Book Company is at 331 N. Last Chance Gulch, Helena, MT 59601, with a phone number of (406) 443 0260, according to Visit Helena, the city's tourism organization.

Visit Helena's page for the store also carries its event calendar. For October 2026 it lists a book release evening on October 6 from 6 to 8, a tarot deck swap on October 16 at 6, and an author evening on October 27 at 6. Those events turn a bookstore stop into an evening plan for anyone in town that week.

The store is not a coffee counter, and this post does not describe it as one. It belongs here because it sits on the walking mall a short walk from Helena's Gulch coffee houses, and because a morning of bread and coffee followed by an hour with books is one of the most Helena ways to spend a day downtown.

Last Chance Gulch, the Street That Started the City

Last Chance Gulch is where Helena began. On July 14, 1864, a prospecting party known as the Four Georgians found gold in a gulch off Prickly Pear Creek, and the mining camp that grew along it took the name Last Chance Gulch. By the fall of 1864 the camp had more than 200 people, and on October 30 of that year a group met to name the town and lay out its streets.

Helena has been the capital of Montana Territory since 1875 and of the state since 1889. Referendums in 1892 and 1894 kept the capital here, and the Montana State Capitol was completed in 1902. Roughly 18 percent of working Helenans work for state government agencies, a large weekday working population for a capital city of this size. The city's nicknames, Queen City of the Rockies and The Capital City, carry both halves of that history, gold camp and seat of government.

Today the Gulch is Helena's walking mall. It was completed in the early 1980s, and during the following decade a three block shopping district was renovated along the path of the original Last Chance Gulch. Helena's coffee houses on the Gulch, which the sister posts in this series cover by address, sit along that stretch.

Close by is Reeder's Alley, where more than 30 brick and stone one room tenements for miners were built between 1872 and 1884. Visit Helena keeps its own office there, at 105 Reeder's Alley, with a phone number of (406) 449 2107, which makes the alley a practical first stop for a visitor who wants a map and a list of what is open.

Planning a Bakery Morning in Helena

Put the posted hours together and a bakery morning plans itself. Park Avenue Bakery at 44 South Park Avenue opens at 7 Monday through Saturday and at 8 on Sunday. Vanilla Bean at 1324 Gallatin opens at 7 Monday through Saturday, with no Sunday hours. The Grateful Bread at 201 N Rodney St is best checked on the day.

From any of the three, the Last Chance Gulch walking mall and its coffee houses are part of the same downtown day, and Montana Book Company at 331 N. Last Chance Gulch adds a bookstore stop. Reeder's Alley and the Visit Helena office at 105 Reeder's Alley round out the morning for a first time visitor.

None of this replaces Helena's coffee houses. It sits beside them. A drinker who wants an espresso bar has Cruse Avenue, the Gulch and Prospect Avenue. A drinker who wants coffee with fresh bread has South Park Avenue, Gallatin and North Rodney Street, and every one of those doors is worth knowing by number.

For a visitor with a full day, a bakery morning can also lead out of downtown. Helena's surroundings include Mount Helena City Park and, to the north, the Sleeping Giant mountain formation, and a box of pastries from any of the three counters travels well on a trail or a scenic drive.
