Nine Eight Five Coffee sits at 985 S E St in downtown San Bernardino, on the same street as San Manuel Stadium at 280 South E Street. That one street is a good place to start, because San Bernardino's coffee is easiest to understand street by street. E Street and 4th Street downtown, Waterman Avenue, Hospitality Lane, Inland Center Drive and North Varsity Avenue each carry their own addresses.

San Bernardino is a big city, 221,774 people in the 2023 American Community Survey, three times the size of Redlands next door at 72,985. Hillcane's hub post on this area keeps the two cities apart, and this post stays on the San Bernardino side of the line. It is built only from addresses and posted hours that the businesses publish themselves, plus a few civic landmarks that help place each street.

Downtown San Bernardino: E Street

Nine Eight Five Coffee is at 985 S E St, and it explains its own name plainly: 985 is its building address. It describes itself as a specialty coffee shop in San Bernardino, CA, tucked into the heart of the city, and its tagline reads From San Bernardino to the World. Its story page says it opened in 2022, and its posted hours are simple: open every day from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

That schedule makes E Street one of the easiest coffee stops in the city to plan. There is no day to remember to avoid, and the 6 p.m. close covers most of an afternoon downtown.

E Street is also where downtown's biggest crowd shows up. San Manuel Stadium, at 280 South E Street, has been home to the Inland Empire 66ers, the Single A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, since it opened in 1996. The team describes it as an 8,000 capacity ballpark with the San Bernardino Mountains as the backdrop beyond the outfield walls. On a game day, E Street carries fans as well as downtown workers.

A Ballpark on a Coffee Street

San Manuel Stadium deserves a little more space, because it shapes how E Street feels. The team's ballpark page says the stadium was designed by Populous, the architecture firm behind Camden Yards, and describes a postcard backdrop of the San Bernardino Mountains beyond the outfield. Metrolink's visitor guide adds that the park has grass seating for several thousand additional fans and that each seat is angled toward home plate.

For coffee, the useful detail is simply that both addresses are on the same street. A fan who wants a cup before an evening game can look up 985 S E St and know it is on E Street, with posted hours running to 6 p.m. every day. A downtown worker can do the same on a weekday lunch break.

That kind of pairing, a landmark and a cafe on one named street, is exactly how people give directions in a big city. It is also how a search engine connects a question like coffee near San Manuel Stadium to a real address. The street name does the work, which is why I keep naming it.

Downtown San Bernardino: 4th Street and the Civic Blocks

A few blocks over, Abstraction Coffee is at 479 W 4th St, San Bernardino, CA 92401, and it describes itself as located in downtown San Bernardino. Its posted hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with no Saturday or Sunday hours, and it notes that hours may vary.

That weekday schedule fits the civic blocks around it. The City of San Bernardino lists its City Information Center at Vanir Tower, 290 North D Street, San Bernardino, CA 92401, the same ZIP code as 479 W 4th St and 280 South E Street. The city's office hours run Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A weekday cafe open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. is working on the same rhythm as the offices around it.

Put E Street and 4th Street together and downtown San Bernardino has two coffee addresses with two different schedules: every day on E Street, weekdays only on 4th Street. Knowing both is the difference between a wasted Saturday trip and a good one.

Getting Downtown Without a Car

Downtown San Bernardino has a rail connection. Metrolink's guide to San Manuel Stadium names San Bernardino Downtown as the nearest station and gives walking directions from the platform: west toward W Rialto Ave, then right onto S E St to the ballpark.

That walk puts a rider on E Street, the same street as 985 S E St. For anyone coming in by train for a game, a meeting at the civic blocks or an errand downtown, E Street is the coffee street closest to the platform.

It is worth checking the Metrolink schedule before relying on this. Its own site posted a notice that San Bernardino Line trains would not run on Saturday and Sunday, September 26 and 27, 2026, because of a track closure. Service notices change, and the rail option is only useful on days the trains are running.

Waterman Avenue

Waterman Avenue is the next street to know. Gordo's Cafecito lists its address on its own ordering page as 1003 N Waterman Ave, San Bernardino, CA 92410, with a phone number of (909) 815 9218. The same page lists pickup hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day of the week.

That gives Waterman Avenue a 7 p.m. close seven days a week, a useful window for an early evening cup. It is also a separate street from downtown's E Street and 4th Street, so it deserves its own place on the map rather than being folded into a downtown description.

The 92410 ZIP code on Waterman Avenue shows up again on West 2nd Street, where Dutch Bros lists one of its three San Bernardino stands at 825 W 2nd St, San Bernardino, CA 92410. Same ZIP, different street. As always, the street tells you more than the ZIP code does.

Hospitality Lane and Inland Center Drive

On Hospitality Lane, Dutch Bros lists a stand at 877 E Hospitality Ln, San Bernardino, CA 92408. That is one of the chain's three city locations, and it carries a 92408 ZIP code.

Inland Center Drive shares that ZIP code. Inland Center, the regional mall, is at 500 Inland Center Drive, San Bernardino, CA 92408, and it posts regular hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. The mall's own food and drink menu includes a Coffee, Dessert and Specialty Items category.

For anyone combining coffee with a shopping trip, the shared 92408 ZIP code is a handy reminder that the Hospitality Lane stand and the mall are listed in the same part of the city, and the full street address is what a driver needs to find the right lot.

North Varsity Avenue and the University

The third Dutch Bros stand is at 4236 N Varsity Ave, San Bernardino, CA 92407. That ZIP code is shared by California State University, San Bernardino, which lists its campus at 5500 University Parkway, San Bernardino, CA 92407.

The university is a useful landmark for placing this address on a mental map. A campus on University Parkway is a very different setting from E Street's ballpark and civic blocks or from a mall on Inland Center Drive.

Put the three Dutch Bros stands together, 4236 N Varsity Ave, 877 E Hospitality Ln and 825 W 2nd St, and you have three separate ZIP codes, 92407, 92408 and 92410, covered by one chain inside a single city. That is how big San Bernardino is.

The Chain Footprint in Context

The Dutch Bros San Bernardino page lists three locations in the city. Its Redlands page lists one, at 9853 Alabama St. That gives the two cities four stands between them, and it is a good example of why the cities should be counted separately: three in a city of 221,774 and one in a city of 72,985.

The chain labels each stand by its own city, and it is a model worth copying. A San Bernardino cafe is a San Bernardino cafe, and a Redlands cafe is a Redlands cafe, even when a drinker in one city is a short drive from the other.

For an independent on any of these streets, the takeaway is the same one the chain already follows: give the full street address, give the city, and give the hours, all on your own page. That is what lets a drinker on Varsity Avenue, Hospitality Lane or E Street find the right door.

Not Redlands, Not Riverside, Not Los Angeles

This post keeps its boundaries firm. Redlands has its own coffee streets, Colton Avenue, Lugonia Avenue, Redlands Boulevard, Alabama Street and Nevada Street, and those belong in the Redlands posts. Riverside is a separate city with its own file. Los Angeles is further west and stays out entirely.

San Bernardino deserves to be described on its own terms. It is the larger of the two cities covered here by a wide margin, it has its own downtown with a ballpark, a civic tower and a rail station, and its coffee spreads across streets that a Redlands post simply does not cover.

That is why this post exists. A drinker asking where to get coffee in San Bernardino should get San Bernardino streets in the answer, not a Redlands address with a note that San Bernardino is nearby.

Planning a San Bernardino Coffee Day

Here is how the posted hours fit together. For an early weekday start downtown, 479 W 4th St opens at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday and 985 S E St opens at 7 a.m. every day. For a weekend downtown, E Street is the address to use, since 4th Street posts no weekend hours. For a late afternoon or early evening cup on the east side, 1003 N Waterman Ave lists pickup until 7 p.m. daily.

If the day includes shopping, Inland Center opens at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday. If it includes a game, San Manuel Stadium is on E Street, a few blocks up the street from 985 S E St. If it includes a campus visit, 5500 University Parkway is the address to put in the map.

Hours change, so check each business's own page before a special trip. The streets will not change: E Street, 4th Street, Waterman Avenue, Hospitality Lane, Inland Center Drive and Varsity Avenue are the San Bernardino coffee map, and each one is worth knowing by name.

Two small habits help on any of these streets. Save the full street address with the city name attached, so a map app never confuses a San Bernardino address with one in Redlands or Riverside. And look at the posted hours on the morning you go, because schedules shift, and the 4th Street cafe itself notes that its hours may vary.

No. San Bernardino, with 221,774 residents in the 2023 survey, is its own city with its own downtown, ballpark, civic tower and rail station. Riverside has a separate file, and Los Angeles stays out of these posts entirely.
