Westside Santa Cruz Coffee on Ingalls, Swift, Fair and West Cliff

Most coffee guides to Santa Cruz start on Pacific Avenue downtown. This one starts on the other side of town. The Westside has a coffee map of its own, spread across a handful of streets between the Mission Street corridor and the cliffs: Ingalls Street, Swift Street, Fair Avenue, Mission Street Extension and West Cliff Drive. Each has a room with an address, posted hours and a reason people go there.
Santa Cruz is a city of 60,953 people by the Census Bureau's 2023 five year count, and Choose Santa Cruz, the city's economic development office, counts twelve coffee options across just over twelve square miles in its 2025 coffee guide. A good share of them sit on the Westside. This post walks those streets one at a time, using the addresses and hours each shop posts for itself, read on September 27, 2026, and the praise that Choose Santa Cruz, Good Times, Islands and Eater San Francisco have published about them.
Ingalls Street: 11th Hour Coffee Westside
11th Hour Coffee runs its Westside location at 402 Ingalls St Ste 19, and its own page lists hours of 7am to 5pm, Monday through Sunday. Choose Santa Cruz dates this location to 2021, when 11th Hour opened a second location in the Swift St. Courtyard, the group of businesses around Ingalls and Swift.
The company describes the room in its own words as sitting on Ingalls Street near the coast, a quieter space than its downtown room, with natural wood tables, a garden patio and a neighborhood that tends to stay. The kitchen runs through mid afternoon, the room is open seven days, and there is free wifi, plenty of street parking and large public lots nearby. It also doubles as an event space, with a recurring lineup of trivia, open mics, drag bingo and comedy nights.
The drinks have their own following. Islands, in a December 13, 2025 feature on Santa Cruz cafes that locals recommend, pointed to 11th Hour's Honey Bee Latte, made with honey and lavender, and to its matcha drinks, including the Flat Green and the Conflicted Hippie, which uses three different alternative milks. In the Good Times readers' Best of Santa Cruz County 2026 awards, 11th Hour Coffee won the Coffee House category.
Swift Street: Cat & Cloud's Westside Headquarters
On Swift Street, Cat & Cloud Coffee runs its headquarters room at 719 Swift St Suite 56. Its own locations page lists it as open every day from 6:30am to 3pm and calls it the company's only location with a full kitchen, with bowls, plates and burritos on the menu. The same page describes it as tucked away on the West Side of Santa Cruz, right down the road from Natural Bridges Beach.
Choose Santa Cruz notes that this Westside location opened two weeks before the pandemic struck in 2020, and adds that its breakfast burrito is totally worth the wait. The same guide traces the company's story back to an idea in 2015 and a first shop in 2016 on Portola Drive in Live Oak, and Islands adds that the whole thing began as a Kickstarter campaign. Islands, in its December 2025 feature, singled out the Swift Street headquarters as the best bet among the company's locations for food, described the brand's bubblegum pink and sky blue look, and noted that its stated priority is hospitality.
Choose Santa Cruz makes the same point about hospitality in its own words, saying you are almost guaranteed to walk out feeling like a million bucks because of the compliments and the coffee. For a Westside morning that starts early, a 6:30am door on Swift Street is a good place to begin.
Fair Avenue: Verve at 1010 Fair
Verve Coffee Roasters runs a Westside shop at 1010 Fair Ave. Its own locations page lists it as open every day from 7am to 6pm, with the phone number 831 425 5648. Choose Santa Cruz notes that Verve has shops downtown and on the Westside covering nearly every part of the city, and traces the company's start to 2007, on 41st Avenue in Live Oak. The guide says Verve came in mid pack on the city's coffee timeline but undeniably helped put Santa Cruz on the map for coffee.
The Choose Santa Cruz guide also includes the go to orders of the city's own economic development and housing team, and one of them comes from this room: the economic development manager's pick is a Nitro Flashbrew from the Westside. That is about as local a recommendation as a coffee order gets.
Good Times readers placed Verve among the top picks in the Coffee House category of Best of Santa Cruz County 2026. Its 7am to 6pm day, every day of the week, makes Fair Avenue an easy stop to fit into a Westside afternoon as well as a morning.
Mission Street Extension: Alta Organic Coffee Warehouse
Alta Organic Coffee Warehouse sits at 2712 Mission Street Extension, and its own page lists hours of 8am to 3pm Monday through Friday and 8am to 1:30pm on Saturday, with the phone number 831 427 3373. It is a weekday and Saturday morning stop, and it posts no Sunday hours.
Choose Santa Cruz dates Alta's Westside home on Mission Street Extension to 2014, after eighteen years up the coast in Davenport, and notes that it is a Monterey Bay Area Green Business. Islands, in its December 2025 feature, named Alta among the local favorites worth a stop and called it a California staple.
The hours make Alta a morning stop. On a weekday, the door is open from 8am until 3pm, which covers breakfast and lunch. On Saturday, the window closes at 1:30pm, so a late Saturday plan should put Mission Street Extension first. A warehouse espresso bar with a Green Business certification and a twelve year Westside history is a good reason to plan the morning around it.
West Cliff Drive: Shrine Coffee by Steamer Lane
Out on the cliffs, Shrine Coffee sits at 544 West Cliff Dr. Choose Santa Cruz describes it as a non profit community coffee shop right next to the legendary Steamer Lane, in a conference room of the Shrine of St. Joseph Church that was transformed into a coffee shop, and says it opened in March 2020. The same guide calls it a space for everyone.
Steamer Lane ties West Cliff Drive to the city's surf culture, and coffee is part of that routine. Eater San Francisco captured the link in an August 18, 2022 piece that called Santa Cruz Northern California's surfing holy land and recommended a stop at 11th Hour Coffee after a session at Steamer Lane, describing its downtown room as a lo fi coffee shop to rejuvenate in afterward.
For Shrine Coffee, the address and the setting are the fixed points: a church campus at 544 West Cliff Dr, right next to Steamer Lane, and a non profit coffee shop that Choose Santa Cruz describes as open to everyone.
The Westside by the Clock
Put the posted hours side by side and a Westside day takes shape. At 6:30am, Cat & Cloud opens on Swift Street. At 7am, 11th Hour opens on Ingalls Street and Verve opens on Fair Avenue. At 8am on weekdays and Saturday, Alta opens on Mission Street Extension.
The afternoon thins out in steps. Alta closes at 1:30pm on Saturday and 3pm on weekdays. Cat & Cloud on Swift Street closes at 3pm every day. 11th Hour on Ingalls closes at 5pm every day. Verve on Fair Avenue closes at 6pm every day, so a coffee between 5pm and 6pm on the Westside points to Fair Avenue.
Sunday is simple. Cat & Cloud on Swift, 11th Hour on Ingalls and Verve on Fair all post the same hours seven days a week. Alta posts hours Monday through Saturday, so a Sunday on Mission Street Extension needs another plan. Anyone who wants a later cup than 6pm will be heading downtown, where another Hillcane neighborhood post covers the evening options. Across a full week, the posted hours add up to 77 on Fair Avenue, 70 on Ingalls Street, 59 and a half on Swift Street and 40 and a half on Mission Street Extension, or 247 hours of Westside coffee between them.
A Westside Morning, Street by Street
A Westside morning can be built around the cliffs and the courtyards. Start early on Swift Street at 6:30am, or at 7am on Ingalls or Fair. Walk or drive out to West Cliff Drive for a look at Steamer Lane, where Shrine Coffee sits on the church campus. Head toward Natural Bridges Beach, which Cat & Cloud describes as right down the road from its Swift Street room.
A weekday version can add Mission Street Extension, where Alta opens at 8am. A Saturday version should reach Alta before 1:30pm. A Sunday version should stay with Swift, Ingalls and Fair, which all post Sunday hours.
The point of mapping it this way is that the Westside works as a neighborhood in its own right. A visitor staying on this side of town does not need to cross to Pacific Avenue for a good cup, and a local who lives here already knows that each of these streets has its own room, its own regulars and its own schedule.
What the Local Press Keeps Coming Back To
Read the Choose Santa Cruz guide, the Islands feature, the Good Times awards and the Eater piece together, and a few Westside threads repeat. Food matters here: a full kitchen and a breakfast burrito on Swift Street, a kitchen running through mid afternoon on Ingalls. Community matters too: a non profit coffee shop on a church campus by Steamer Lane, and an Ingalls room that hosts trivia, open mics and comedy nights.
The Westside also carries a real coffee timeline. Choose Santa Cruz dates Alta's Westside home on Mission Street Extension to 2014, puts Shrine Coffee's opening in March 2020 and Cat & Cloud's Westside opening in 2020, and places 11th Hour's Ingalls room in 2021. That is more than a decade of coffee history across these streets on one side of town.
Why the Westside Gets Its Own Map
A single list of the best coffee in Santa Cruz tends to flatten all of this into one boardwalk shaped picture. The Westside does not fit that picture. It has five coffee addresses on five different streets, from the courtyard on Ingalls and Swift to the warehouse on Mission Street Extension and the church campus on West Cliff Drive, each with a different kind of room and a different daily rhythm.
That is why this series gives the Westside its own post, alongside the neighborhood map of the whole city and the profiles of individual rooms. The addresses are the fixed points: 402 Ingalls St Ste 19, 719 Swift St Suite 56, 1010 Fair Ave, 2712 Mission Street Extension and 544 West Cliff Dr. The hours tell you when to go. The rest is a good reason to spend a morning on this side of Santa Cruz.
