Coffee in Cathedral City, Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage

Cathedral City counts 52,047 residents in the 2023 American Community Survey five year estimate. Palm Desert counts 51,551. Palm Springs, the city most visitors name when they talk about this part of the Coachella Valley, counts 44,998. Rancho Mirage, sitting between Cathedral City and Palm Desert on Highway 111, counts 17,375. Those four numbers are the quickest way to understand why a coffee guide that stops at the Palm Springs city line leaves out most of the people who live along this stretch of the valley.
This post is about the three cities on the east side of Palm Springs: Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert. Each one is its own incorporated city with its own streets, its own shopping districts and its own coffee addresses. None of them is a neighborhood of Palm Springs, and none of their populations should ever be added to the Palm Springs figure. What follows walks the three cities in order, west to east, naming coffee shops only by address and by the hours each one posts on its own site, and then looks at where the national drive thru chains have set up in the valley.
The companion posts on Palm Springs cover the three coffee streets inside the city itself, Tahquitz Canyon Way, Indian Canyon Drive and North Palm Canyon Drive, along with what a Palm Springs coffee search returns and how the city's coffee differs from Los Angeles and San Diego. This one starts where those stop: at the city line, heading east.
Three Cities, Three Incorporation Dates
The cities beside Palm Springs are not old suburbs that grew into their names. Each one incorporated in the late twentieth century, and each did so separately. Rancho Mirage incorporated on August 3, 1973. Palm Desert followed on November 26, 1973, and later became a charter city in 1997. Cathedral City incorporated on November 16, 1981, making it the youngest of the three as a city even though it is now the largest of them by population.
Those dates matter for a coffee reader for one simple reason: each city built its own commercial streets on its own schedule. Palm Desert's shopping district, Rancho Mirage's resort corridor and Cathedral City's stretch of East Palm Canyon Drive and Ramon Road grew up under separate city governments, with separate planning and separate identities. A cafe on one of those streets belongs to that city's story, not to Palm Springs's.
It also explains why a visitor can cross three city lines along Highway 111 without noticing a change in the scenery. The road is continuous. The cities are not. The addresses below keep them apart on purpose.
Cathedral City: East Palm Canyon Drive
Cathedral City is the first city east of Palm Springs, and its main road will look familiar. East Palm Canyon Drive, the same route that runs through Palm Springs, carries on into Cathedral City as part of Highway 111. The old stage and freight trail that crossed this part of the desert later became the basis for Palm Canyon Drive and Highway 111 through the city, which is why the street name carries across the line while the city changes.
Hot Lips Coffee Shop is at 68461 East Palm Canyon Dr, Cathedral City, CA 92234. Its own homepage headline calls it A Daytime Disco for your Mouth and Soul, and it posts its hours plainly: Wednesday through Monday, 8:00 in the morning to 1:00 in the afternoon, closed Tuesdays. The same homepage describes a Hot Lips After Dark series with DJs, cabarets and musicians, and an artisan boutique of gift offerings to browse with a coffee in hand.
That street number is the detail that trips people up. A search for Palm Canyon Drive coffee can return a Cathedral City address, and a visitor who assumes Palm Canyon means Palm Springs can end up a city away from where they meant to be. The five digit number beginning with 68 is the tell. Palm Springs's own North Palm Canyon coffee addresses run in the hundreds and low thousands, from 515 to 1551.
Cathedral City: Ramon Road and Date Palm Drive
Cathedral City's second coffee street is Ramon Road. Koffi, the valley coffee company whose first cafe opened in 2002, keeps its Cathedral City Cafe and Drive Thru at 67260 Ramon Rd, Cathedral City, CA 92234. Koffi's own page for that room places it near Sprouts Farmers Market and Home Depot, calls it the company's first drive thru location, and lists it as open daily from 6:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening. The same page describes a patio overlooking the mountains for anyone who would rather sit than drive through.
A few streets over, Date Palm Drive holds the city's national chain drive thru. Dutch Bros lists a Cathedral City location at 34051 Date Palm Dr on its own locator. Date Palm Drive is also where the city keeps some of its larger recreation sites, including the Big League Dreams sports park at the corner of Date Palm and Dinah Shore drives, which puts the chain's window on a busy arterial rather than on a walkable main street.
So Cathedral City's coffee map has three distinct pieces: a daytime independent on East Palm Canyon Drive, a local company's cafe and drive thru on Ramon Road, and a national chain's window on Date Palm Drive. For a city of 52,047 people, that is a real and varied set of choices, spread across the city rather than stacked on one block.
Rancho Mirage: Highway 111 and The River
East of Cathedral City, Highway 111 enters Rancho Mirage, the smallest of the three cities at 17,375 residents. It is a resort and residential city, long associated with Sunnylands, the Annenberg estate that became known as the western White House during the Nixon administration, and with former President Gerald Ford and Betty Ford, who lived in Rancho Mirage for thirty years.
Rancho Mirage's coffee address sits on the highway itself. Koffi Rancho Mirage 111 Cafe is at 71 380 Highway 111, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270. Koffi's page for the room places it three blocks west of The River, the city's outdoor shopping, dining and entertainment center, and lists it as open daily from 6:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening. The page also describes the room as an easy spot for casual business meetings or time with friends.
The River is a useful landmark for a visitor who does not know Rancho Mirage's street grid. It sits near Highway 111 and Bob Hope Drive, and it serves as an outdoor venue for entertainment, dining and shopping. A cafe three blocks west of it is on the same highway, in the same city, and easy to describe to someone arriving from either direction.
Palm Desert: Highway 111 and El Paseo
Palm Desert, the next city east, counts 51,551 residents, slightly fewer than Cathedral City and more than Palm Springs. The town took the name Palm Desert in 1951. After the Second World War, the part of the area south of Highway 111 was developed into El Paseo, a shopping district modeled after Rodeo Drive, and El Paseo is still the city's shopping district today.
Varraco is at 73891 Highway 111 in Palm Desert. That address sits on the highway rather than on El Paseo itself, which is worth knowing for a visitor who assumes every Palm Desert shop is on the shopping street. Highway 111 and El Paseo run close together through the city but they are separate roads, and a street number on one does not point to the other.
Palm Desert also holds an outpost of a Palm Springs institution. The Palm Springs Art Museum's Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden is at 72 567 Highway 111 in Palm Desert, open every day from sunrise to sunset according to the museum's own visit page. For a visitor who wants a coffee and a walk among outdoor sculpture, the garden and the highway addresses around it make a simple Palm Desert morning without crossing back into Palm Springs.
How the Roads Tie the Three Cities Together
Two roads do most of the work in this part of the valley. Highway 111 runs through all three cities in a line, carrying the East Palm Canyon Drive name through Cathedral City and continuing through Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert. Interstate 10 runs north of them, and in Palm Desert it is reached through the Monterey Avenue, Cook Street and Washington Street exits. State Route 74, the Pines to Palms Scenic Byway, comes down from the San Jacinto Mountains and ends at Highway 111 in Palm Desert before continuing north as Monterey Avenue.
That road pattern shapes where coffee sits. Most of the addresses in this post are on Highway 111 or one step off it: East Palm Canyon Drive in Cathedral City, the 71 thousand block in Rancho Mirage, the 73 thousand block in Palm Desert. Ramon Road and Date Palm Drive are the exceptions, and both are the kind of wide arterials where a drive thru makes sense.
For a reader planning a morning, the practical rule is to read the first two digits of the street number. On Highway 111 through these cities, a number in the 67 and 68 thousands points to Cathedral City, 71 thousand points to Rancho Mirage and 73 thousand points to Palm Desert. The road does not change its look at a city line, but the address does.
Where the Drive Thru Chains Landed
The national drive thru chains tell the same story about city lines from another angle. Dutch Bros' own locator has no Palm Springs city page. Its desert locations sit in the neighboring cities instead: one in Cathedral City at 34051 Date Palm Dr, two in Indio at 81 776 Highway 111 and 41906 Jackson St, and one in La Quinta at 44175 Jefferson St. Indio counts 90,669 residents in the 2023 American Community Survey and La Quinta 38,299, so the chain has set up in the two largest cities east of Palm Desert and in Cathedral City.
7 Brew's own locator shows no page for Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Indio or the city of Coachella. Between the two chains, that leaves Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert without a Dutch Bros or 7 Brew city page, and Cathedral City with one Dutch Bros window on Date Palm Drive.
None of this is a verdict on anyone. It is simply where the windows are. A commuter who wants a national drive thru is looking at Date Palm Drive, the Indio stretch of Highway 111, Jackson Street or Jefferson Street. A visitor who wants a local room has the Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert addresses above.
Why These Cities Deserve Their Own Coffee Pages
It is tempting for a travel writer to fold the whole west valley into one Palm Springs area list. The population figures argue against it. Cathedral City and Palm Desert together count 103,598 residents in the 2023 American Community Survey, more than twice the Palm Springs figure. Those residents drink coffee on their own streets on ordinary weekdays, not only when a visitor passes through.
For a cafe in one of these cities, naming the city matters as much as naming the street. A page that says Cathedral City and East Palm Canyon Drive, or Rancho Mirage and three blocks west of The River, tells a drinker exactly where the door is. A page that says only Palm Springs area leaves them to guess which of four cities, and which of several Palm Canyon Drive addresses, they are headed to.
That is the same principle the Palm Springs posts in this series apply to Tahquitz Canyon Way, Indian Canyon Drive and North Palm Canyon Drive. The valley is a string of real cities, each with its own streets. Its coffee is easiest to find when it is described that way.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which cities sit next to Palm Springs on the east side?
Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert sit in a line east of Palm Springs along Highway 111. The 2023 American Community Survey five year estimate counts 52,047 residents in Cathedral City, 17,375 in Rancho Mirage and 51,551 in Palm Desert, against 44,998 in Palm Springs. Each is a separate incorporated city, so their coffee addresses belong on their own lists rather than a Palm Springs proper list.
Is Cathedral City larger than Palm Springs?
Yes. Cathedral City counts 52,047 residents in the 2023 American Community Survey five year estimate, compared with 44,998 in Palm Springs. Palm Desert, at 51,551, is also larger. Cathedral City incorporated on November 16, 1981, later than both Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert, which incorporated in 1973, yet it now holds the largest population of the three cities east of Palm Springs.
Where is Hot Lips Coffee Shop, and when is it open?
Hot Lips Coffee Shop is at 68461 East Palm Canyon Dr, Cathedral City, CA 92234. Its own homepage lists hours of Wednesday through Monday, 8:00 in the morning to 1:00 in the afternoon, and says it is closed Tuesdays. The same page describes a Hot Lips After Dark series with DJs, cabarets and musicians, plus an artisan boutique, under the headline A Daytime Disco for your Mouth and Soul.
Is East Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs or Cathedral City?
Both, which is why it causes confusion. Palm Canyon Drive runs through Palm Springs and carries on east into Cathedral City as part of Highway 111. A five digit address in the 68 thousands, such as Hot Lips at 68461 East Palm Canyon Dr, is in Cathedral City. Palm Springs coffee addresses on North Palm Canyon Drive run from 515 to 1551.
Where is Koffi's Cathedral City location, and what are its hours?
Koffi's Cathedral City Cafe and Drive Thru is at 67260 Ramon Rd, Cathedral City, CA 92234, near Sprouts Farmers Market and Home Depot according to Koffi's own page. The page calls it the company's first drive thru location and lists it as open daily from 6:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening, with a patio overlooking the mountains for guests who prefer to sit.
Where is the coffee in Rancho Mirage?
Koffi Rancho Mirage 111 Cafe is at 71 380 Highway 111, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270. Koffi's page places it three blocks west of The River, the city's outdoor shopping, dining and entertainment center, and lists it as open daily from 6:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening. Rancho Mirage counts 17,375 residents in the 2023 American Community Survey and incorporated on August 3, 1973.
Where is Varraco in Palm Desert?
Varraco is at 73891 Highway 111 in Palm Desert, a highway address rather than one on El Paseo, the shopping district developed south of the highway after the Second World War and modeled after Rodeo Drive. Palm Desert counts 51,551 residents in the 2023 American Community Survey, incorporated on November 26, 1973, and sits east of Rancho Mirage on the same highway.
Is there a Dutch Bros in Palm Springs?
Not according to the chain's own locator, which has no Palm Springs city page. Dutch Bros lists one Cathedral City location at 34051 Date Palm Dr, two in Indio at 81 776 Highway 111 and 41906 Jackson St, and one in La Quinta at 44175 Jefferson St. Indio counts 90,669 residents and La Quinta 38,299 in the 2023 American Community Survey five year estimate.
Does 7 Brew have locations in Cathedral City or Indio?
7 Brew's own locator shows no page for Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Indio or the city of Coachella. Taken with the Dutch Bros footprint of one Cathedral City window on Date Palm Drive and three windows in Indio and La Quinta, the national drive thru format has a light presence in the west valley, and none inside Rancho Mirage or Palm Desert on either chain's city pages.
How can I tell which valley city a Highway 111 address is in?
Read the first two digits of the street number. Along Highway 111 east of Palm Springs, addresses in the 67 and 68 thousands point to Cathedral City, such as 68461 East Palm Canyon Dr. The 71 thousands point to Rancho Mirage, such as 71 380 Highway 111, and the 73 thousands point to Palm Desert, such as 73891 Highway 111. The road stays continuous while the cities change.
