Downtown Roseburg's coffee sits on two downtown streets a short walk apart. Gathering Grounds Coffee House gives its home as 740 SE Cass Ave, downtown. Bumble and Bean Coffee sits at 410 SE Jackson St. Around them sit the blocks of the Roseburg Downtown Historic District, with the 1916 post office on Cass and the Kohlhagen Building on Jackson. This is the walkable room of the city's coffee map, the one place in town where you can park once and reach a cup on foot.

Roseburg's coffee splits into four areas: West Harvard Avenue, downtown Cass Avenue and Jackson Street, Garden Valley Boulevard and Airport Road near the Great Umpqua Food Trail. The other three are built around cars and boulevards. Downtown is different, and I wanted a piece that treats it as its own place rather than as one line in a list.

Roseburg is the Douglas County seat on the South Umpqua River, founded in 1851 and home to 23,773 people in the 2023 American Community Survey. It sits on Interstate 5 between Eugene to the north and Grants Pass to the south, and this piece stays inside Roseburg's own downtown blocks.

Two Streets, One Block Apart

The downtown coffee room is easiest to picture as two streets. SE Cass Avenue holds Gathering Grounds Coffee House at 740 SE Cass Ave. SE Jackson Street holds Bumble and Bean Coffee at 410 SE Jackson St. Both carry the SE prefix that marks downtown's southeast quadrant addresses.

A short walk apart is the whole point. On Harvard Avenue or Garden Valley Boulevard, the next coffee stop is a drive away. Downtown, the next one is a short walk, and the walk runs past the city's oldest commercial buildings.

Those two addresses are the anchors, not the whole list. Experience Roseburg, the city's visitor bureau, also notes that Reverie Record Shop at 642 SE Jackson St sells espresso drinks alongside new and used records, beer and small pastries. Downtown coffee here comes in more than one shape.

740 SE Cass Avenue

Gathering Grounds Coffee House describes itself in one line on its own page: a place to gather with friends and family. It gives its location as 740 Cass Ave, Downtown Roseburg, and it keeps an Instagram account at @gathering_grounds.

Experience Roseburg's coffee guide, published January 1, 2024, praised Gathering Grounds for a great espresso and drink menu and fantastic vegan pastries, with a nod to its house made Pop Tarts on the days they appear. The same guide noted a soup of the day and made to order sandwiches. That makes it a lunch stop as much as a coffee stop, which suits a downtown where people are on foot between errands.

Cass Avenue itself carries some of downtown's civic weight. The United States Post Office at 704 SE Cass Ave was built in 1916 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 18, 1979, according to its Wikipedia entry. Its Beaux Arts and Georgian Revival design came from the federal Office of the Supervising Architect. A coffee on Cass puts you on the same street as one of the city's most formal historic buildings.

410 SE Jackson Street

Bumble and Bean Coffee sits at 410 SE Jackson St. When The News Review reported in August 2024 that the coffee house was coming to Jackson Street, it described a rectangular room with a partially exposed brick wall and seating for about 20 to 25 people, with sandwiches, soups, bagels and cream cheese and grab and go breakfast items on the menu.

Experience Roseburg's coffee guide calls it a quaint downtown coffee shop with great vibes, crafted coffees, teas, pastries and more, and points readers to its Instagram at @bumbleandbean.coffee. That is the channel to check for the day's hours and specials before walking over.

Jackson Street is the more commercial of the two downtown streets for a visitor. The Kohlhagen Building at 630 SE Jackson St, built between 1906 and 1912 and listed on the National Register in 1997, is a contributing building in the Roseburg Downtown Historic District. Its Transitional Italianate and Commercial style fronts are part of what a walker sees between coffee stops.

The Historic District Around the Coffee

The Roseburg Downtown Historic District is the frame for this whole room. The Kohlhagen Building is one of its contributing properties, and the 1916 post office on Cass is an individually listed landmark of its own. A walk between the two coffee addresses passes through the older downtown blocks that the district protects.

That history matches the city's own story. Wikipedia's article on Roseburg records its founding in 1851 by settler Aaron Rose, who established a homestead within today's city limits on September 23 of that year, and notes the nickname Timber Capital of the Nation that the city carried by the 1970s. The downtown blocks are the older, pre freeway layer of that story.

For a coffee drinker, the practical effect is scale. Buildings sit close to the sidewalk, storefronts are narrow, and a block goes by quickly. It is a district built for walking, which is exactly what sets it apart from the other three coffee areas in Roseburg.

Getting Downtown From Interstate 5

The Wikipedia exit list for Interstate 5 in Oregon labels exit 124 as OR 138 east to Roseburg City Center and Diamond Lake. That is the downtown exit, and it is the one to take for Cass Avenue and Jackson Street.

The neighboring exits lead to the other coffee areas. Exit 125 is signed for Garden Valley Boulevard, the corridor that holds the Garden Valley coffee stop at 1700 NW Garden Valley Blvd and a Dutch Bros stand at 770 NW Garden Valley Blvd. Exit 123 is signed for the Douglas County Fairgrounds and Umpqua Park. Exit 127 is signed for Edenbower Boulevard and North Roseburg.

OR 138 continues east from downtown toward Diamond Lake, which makes downtown the last walkable coffee stop before a drive into the Cascades. For a traveler heading that way, exit 124 puts a downtown cup directly on the route.

Saturday Mornings on Jackson Street

Most Saturdays, Jackson Street becomes a market. The Umpqua Valley Farmers Market runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the 500 block of SE Jackson Street, and The Roseburg Receiver reported that it expanded onto the 600 block beginning May 23, 2026, with the two block layout expected to run through the busy season and possibly into October depending on harvests and vendors.

Both market blocks close to vehicle traffic from 6 a.m. to about 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays, the same report said, while through traffic on Oak Avenue continues. Free timed parking stays available on the surrounding streets and on the lower level of the downtown parking garage.

For a coffee drinker, that makes Saturday the best morning to use the downtown room as it was built to be used. Park in the garage or on a side street, pick up a cup on Jackson or Cass, and walk the market blocks with produce, pasture raised meats, artisan foods and crafts from local growers and makers on either side.

Murals Between the Cups

Downtown's walls are part of the walk. The Experience Roseburg Mural Project started in 2021, and the visitor bureau's mural tour, published October 1, 2025, counts seven murals that can be seen in any order and at your own pace.

Three of them are on Jackson Street. The largest mural in the city, called Notice Beauty or the Caro Building mural, is at 506 SE Jackson St, a botanical woodland scene centered on Toketee Falls with the Umpqua Valley's plants and wildlife. On Cass, the Grand Apartments mural is at 730 SE Cass St, steps from the coffee address at 740 SE Cass Ave.

That puts a mural within a short walk of each coffee stop. A cup on Cass and a look at the Grand Apartments wall, then over to Jackson and the Toketee Falls mural, is a small downtown loop that no boulevard in Roseburg can match.

The Chain Layer Sits Elsewhere

Dutch Bros lists six Roseburg stands on its locator, at 4635 Carnes Rd, 2460 Stewart Pkwy, 770 NW Garden Valley Blvd, 2082 Diamond Lake Blvd, 451 W Corey Ct and 1731 NE Stephens St. None of the six carries a downtown SE Cass or SE Jackson address.

That split is useful for a visitor. The drive thru layer lines the boulevards, where cars move fast and parking lots are large. The downtown room is where the sit down tables and the walking are.

It also means downtown's coffee character comes from its independent cafes and its mixed use shops, not from a chain stand. A cup on Cass or Jackson is a local cup by address.

Blocktober Fest and the Saturday Market

One Saturday a year, downtown turns into a street festival. The fifth annual Roseburg Blocktober Fest runs Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., presented by NeighborWorks Umpqua, according to The Roseburg Receiver on September 25, 2026. It closes SE Jackson and SE Main Streets between SE Lane and SE Douglas Avenues for live music, local food and drink, and family activities, and admission is free.

Organizers estimated about 5,000 people attended the previous year's festival. The Umpqua Valley Farmers Market runs alongside it in the 400 block of SE Main Street, with its hours shifted to 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the day, two hours later than usual.

For a coffee drinker, that is a day to arrive early and walk. SE Jackson Street, home to Bumble and Bean at 410, is one of the two festival streets, and Cass Avenue is a short walk away. A morning cup before the crowds, then the festival, is the natural order.

How to Use the Downtown Room

Treat downtown as a walking stop, not a drive thru. Take exit 124, park once, and plan to walk between Cass and Jackson. Both coffee shops are close enough that a group can split up and meet again in minutes. On a Saturday, add the farmers market, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the 500 and 600 blocks of SE Jackson, with free timed parking on nearby streets, the lower level of the downtown garage as a fallback, and the Notice Beauty mural at 506 SE Jackson St right in the middle of it.

Check each shop's own channel for the day's hours before setting out. Gathering Grounds uses @gathering_grounds on Instagram and Bumble and Bean uses @bumbleandbean.coffee, and seasonal or event day schedules can change.

Then use the rest of downtown. The 1916 post office on Cass, the Kohlhagen Building on Jackson and the storefronts in between are part of why downtown is worth the exit. Roseburg's other coffee areas serve drivers well. This one serves walkers, and it is the only one of the four that does.
