Taos Coffee by the Clock: Morning Hours on the Plaza and Paseo Sur

Taos, New Mexico is a morning coffee town. At 7:00 a.m., World Cup opens at the entrance to Taos Plaza, The Coffee Apothecary opens at 616 Paseo del Pueblo Sur, and on weekdays KOKO opens at 1033 Paseo del Pueblo Sur. By early afternoon, much of the town's coffee day is winding down. For a town of 6,468 residents, according to the 2023 American Community Survey, knowing that clock is the difference between a good morning and a closed door.
Thomas here. I have written before about where Taos coffee sits: the Plaza downtown and the long Paseo del Pueblo Sur corridor running south. This post is about when. Every hour below comes from the business's own page, as of September 27, 2026, sorted by the time of day a visitor or a local actually needs a cup. Where a business does not publish one clear schedule, I have left it out rather than guess.
Taos has seasons that change how people move through town, from summer farmers market Saturdays to ski season on the mountain north of town. Treat this as the shape of a Taos coffee day and check each business's own page before a morning that depends on one exact time.
Seven in the Morning on the Plaza
World Cup, a small Italian style coffee bar at the entrance to Taos Plaza, posts hours of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day of the week. Its address appears as 102 Paseo Del Pueblo Norte on its homepage and as 102a Paseo Del Pueblo Norte on its contact page, and its phone number is 575 770 1367. It gives its founding year as 1994.
Two practical details matter before you walk up. World Cup takes cash and Venmo only, and it notes that it has an ATM on site. For a visitor carrying only a card, that is worth knowing at 7:00 a.m., before the rest of the Plaza is fully awake.
Taos.org, the town's visitor site, featured World Cup in its 2021 roundup of the best coffee shops in Taos, calling it a local institution and a destination spot for visitors, and describing it as open from 7 a.m. to 6ish p.m. More than thirty years after 1994, a seven day, 7:00 a.m. door on the Plaza is one of the fixed points of a Taos morning.
Seven in the Morning on Paseo del Pueblo Sur
South of the Plaza, Paseo del Pueblo Sur carries much of the town's daily traffic, and two coffee counters on it post 7:00 a.m. openings. The Coffee Apothecary, at 616 Paseo del Pueblo Sur, opens at 7:00 a.m. every day. Its phone number is 575 779 8706.
KOKO, at 1033 Paseo del Pueblo Sur across from Five Star, opens at 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. It describes itself as a cafe offering the full spectrum of barista drinks, fresh pastries, and deli and bakery food prepared daily, along with catering. Its phone number is 575 758 9448.
So at 7:00 a.m. on a weekday, a Taos coffee drinker has three open doors across two corridors: one at the Plaza and two along Paseo del Pueblo Sur. On a weekend at the same hour, there are two, one at the Plaza and one at 616 Paseo del Pueblo Sur.
Weekend Mornings
Weekends change the clock. The Coffee Apothecary posts Saturday and Sunday hours of 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., so a weekend visit there is a morning plan. KOKO opens later on Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and posts no Sunday hours. World Cup keeps its 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. schedule on both weekend days.
For visitors in Taos for a weekend, that is the most important paragraph in this post. A Saturday that starts slowly can still end with coffee on the Plaza in the afternoon, but a Sunday cup on Paseo del Pueblo Sur needs to happen before noon.
The Coffee Apothecary drew praise of its own in the same 2021 Taos.org roundup, which said it had earned a solid and well deserved reputation, pointed to its Eiffel chairs and an old meets new Taos feel, and mentioned great service and fast WiFi. A weekend morning is a good time to see that room for yourself, as long as you arrive before noon.
Late Morning and the Lunch Hour
By late morning, the Taos coffee day starts to lean toward food. KOKO says its sandwiches are made fresh each morning and brought to the cafe around 11 a.m., and that it restocks its deli case, quiche case and pie case two to three times a day. It also runs a daily program of soup, sandwich and chicken of the day.
That makes late morning on Paseo del Pueblo Sur a natural time to combine coffee and lunch. A visitor heading south out of town, or a local on a lunch break, can plan around that 11 a.m. arrival.
On the Plaza, World Cup's schedule runs straight through the lunch hour and into the evening, so the Plaza remains a coffee option at any point in the day until 6:00 p.m.
Afternoons and the Early Close
The afternoon is where Taos coffee hours spread out. The Coffee Apothecary's weekday day runs until 3:00 p.m. KOKO's weekday day runs until 4:00 p.m., and its Saturday day until 2:00 p.m. World Cup runs until 6:00 p.m. every day.
That pattern, early openings and mid afternoon endings, rewards anyone who plans coffee as the first stop of the day. If your plans take you out of town, to the mountain, the river or the gorge, the easiest cup is the one you pick up on the way out.
For anyone who needs a cup after 4:00 p.m., the Plaza is the answer according to the posted hours in this post. A late afternoon walk around the Plaza with a coffee from its entrance is an easy way to end a Taos day.
Saturday Market Mornings
The Taos Farmers Market runs its 2026 season on Saturdays from May 16 through October 31, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a shorter schedule of 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the first three Saturdays of November, November 7, 14 and 21, 2026. For the 2026 season, the market is at the Taos County Courthouse parking lot, at the corner of Albright Street and Paseo del Pueblo Sur.
That location puts the market on the same corridor as two of the coffee counters in this post. A Saturday plan can start with a 7:00 a.m. cup at 616 Paseo del Pueblo Sur, move to the market when it opens at 8:00 a.m., and still leave time for a KOKO stop after it opens at 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays.
Market Saturdays are also good days to remember the early close. Weekend coffee on Paseo del Pueblo Sur winds down by noon at one door and by 2:00 p.m. at the other, so the market morning and the coffee morning run on nearly the same clock.
Ski Season and the Road North
Taos Ski Valley announced on September 9, 2026 that its 2026 to 2027 winter season opens on November 26, 2026. The ski area is a separate village on the mountain north of town, not part of the town of Taos itself, so anyone skiing from a room in town starts the day with a drive up the mountain.
For coffee, ski season reinforces everything above. Morning doors matter most, and a 7:00 a.m. opening on the Plaza or on Paseo del Pueblo Sur is exactly when a skier staying in town is looking for a cup before the drive up. After a day on the mountain, the Plaza's 6:00 p.m. schedule is the one that still fits.
Anyone visiting in winter should check each business's own page close to the date, since seasons can bring changes. The hours in this post are the ones posted as of September 27, 2026.
Planning a Full Taos Coffee Day
Put the posted hours side by side and a full Taos coffee day almost plans itself. On a weekday, start at 7:00 a.m. with a cup at the entrance to Taos Plaza, where World Cup describes itself as an organic coffee and beverage centric community gathering place and sums up its outlook in two words: resist mediocrity. Walk the Plaza while the town wakes up.
Mid morning, head south on Paseo del Pueblo Sur. The Coffee Apothecary at 616 is open until 3:00 p.m. on weekdays, and KOKO at 1033 has fresh sandwiches arriving around 11 a.m. and a daily soup, sandwich and chicken of the day. KOKO also points visitors to the Taos Cookery, its store on Bent Street, which keeps a grab and go fridge of its fresh food.
By late afternoon, when the Paseo del Pueblo Sur counters have wound down for the day, the Plaza is still open until 6:00 p.m. A second cup where the morning started is a fitting way to close the loop, and it keeps the whole day on foot or on one short drive along the town's main road.
A Local Town Clock, Not a Chain One
Every coffee door in this post is a local business. Dutch Bros, the drive thru chain, posts 18 New Mexico locations on its state page, in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, Alamogordo, Bernalillo and Santa Fe, and none in Taos. Taos's coffee clock is set by the town's own businesses.
That is part of why the hours look the way they do. A local counter sets its day around its neighbors and its own capacity, and in Taos the posted hours add up to early mornings, a lunch hour built around fresh food, and afternoons that wind down by 3:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. on Paseo del Pueblo Sur.
For a visitor, the lesson is to plan coffee the way locals do: early, on the corridor you are already traveling, and with a quick look at the posted hours before you set out.
What a Taos Coffee Business Can Learn From This Clock
The businesses in this post are easy to include because each of them publishes its hours plainly, day by day. In a town where the coffee day is short and the visitors are many, that clarity is worth more than almost anything else a cafe can put on its page.
A few details make hours easier to use. Name every day of the week, including the ones you do not open. Put the street address next to the hours, the way KOKO pairs 1033 Paseo del Pueblo Sur with its schedule. Mention payment details that could surprise a visitor, the way World Cup notes cash and Venmo only and an ATM on site.
Taos coffee already runs on a clear morning clock. The businesses that say so plainly are the ones a skier, a market shopper or a first time visitor will find at 7:00 a.m., which is exactly when they are looking.
