Scout's Cafe opened its downtown location at 32 N. Fountain Ave. in Springfield, Ohio on Friday, November 7, 2025, with a grand opening that ran from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and rolled into that evening's First Friday. Farther along the same avenue, at 117 South Fountain Ave, Un Mundo Cafe shares an address with the Heritage Center Museum. Between and beyond those two addresses sit a hotel bistro, a performing arts center and the South Fountain Historic District. That is Fountain Avenue, and it makes a good coffee walk.

This post lays the avenue out in the order you would walk it, from the North Fountain numbers down through the South Fountain blocks. Springfield is a Clark County city of 58,410 people, according to the Census Bureau's 2023 five year American Community Survey, and Fountain Avenue is where its downtown museums, stages and coffee counters line up along one street.

I have kept to addresses, posted hours and published facts from each business, the Springfield News Sun and Visit Greater Springfield, all read on September 27, 2026. This is Springfield, Ohio, not Springfield, Illinois or Springfield, Missouri, and not Dayton or Columbus.

Starting at 32 N. Fountain Ave.

The north end of the walk is Scout's Cafe at 32 N. Fountain Ave. The Springfield News Sun reported on November 6, 2025 that this downtown room would be the cafe's third location, joining 1399 Moorefield Road, which opened in 2017, and 3660 E. National Road on the east side. The paper reported that the cafe is open seven days a week.

Scout's describes itself on its own site as a cozy cafe for coffee lovers, with specialty coffee and pastries. Visit Greater Springfield describes a menu of espresso drinks including lattes, cappuccinos, mochas and Americanos, along with frozen lattes, smoothies, frozen cremes, iced teas and hot teas, and kid friendly drink options. That range makes the downtown room an easy first stop for a mixed group.

The opening day itself says something about the street. The News Sun reported that the downtown grand opening ran into First Friday that evening, from 5 to 8 p.m. Opening day and a downtown evening event shared the same Friday. For current hours at the Fountain Avenue location, check the cafe's own channels before you go.

Crossing to South Fountain

Walking south, the addresses switch from North Fountain to South Fountain, and the avenue changes character. The blocks ahead hold the Courtyard by Marriott, the Heritage Center Museum and the Clark State Performing Arts Center, three neighbors that together make up much of downtown Springfield's museum and stage life.

At 100 South Fountain Avenue, inside the Courtyard by Marriott downtown, Mela Urban Bistro serves dinner. Visit Greater Springfield describes it as a polished, contemporary room for steaks, seafood and daily specials, with reservations recommended. It is not a coffee stop, but it marks the hotel where many downtown visitors stay, and that makes the coffee counters on either side of it the natural morning choices for hotel guests.

A visitor staying at the Courtyard can reach both coffee addresses in this post on foot, one on North Fountain and one at 117 South Fountain Ave, on the Heritage Center block.

117 South Fountain Ave: The Heritage Center Block

The center of the walk is the address shared by two very different neighbors. The Heritage Center Museum sits at 117 South Fountain Ave., and Visit Greater Springfield describes it as a building constructed in 1890 that extends an entire city block, one of Springfield's most striking Richardsonian Romanesque buildings. Inside, the museum tells the story of America's Heartland and the historic National Road. The bureau reports that it draws around 30,000 visitors a year, and admission is free.

Un Mundo Cafe shares that 117 South Fountain Ave address. The cafe's name is Spanish for one world, and its own page calls it the local choice. Its posted hours are 7 am to 3 pm Tuesday through Friday and 8 am to 1 pm on Saturday. The phone printed with those hours is (937) 323 8355.

Visit Greater Springfield calls Un Mundo one of downtown Springfield's most community minded spots and tells visitors to expect live music and poetry readings, along with housemade vegan soups and panini sandwiches. The cafe's own page notes many vegan, vegetarian, dairy free and gluten free options. For a museum morning, the pairing is simple: coffee and a sandwich on the same block as a free museum that fills the whole block.

300 South Fountain Avenue: The Performing Arts Center

Farther south, at 300 South Fountain Avenue, the Clark State Performing Arts Center is the avenue's stage. Visit Greater Springfield describes it as Springfield's premiere performance venue, with the 1,500 seat Kuss Auditorium and the 200 seat Turner Studio Theatre, and as the performance home for the Springfield Arts Council and the Springfield Symphony Orchestra.

The center's own directions page describes it as the immediate neighbor to the Courtyard by Marriott and the Heritage Center of Clark County, which is a useful confirmation of how tightly these buildings sit together. It also offers free parking to visitors in several lots, including a north lot in front of the main entrance reached from S. Fountain Ave., and notes limited free street parking on S. Fountain Ave. and S. Limestone Street.

That parking note is the practical key to the walk. A visitor can leave the car in one of the center's lots on a day without a show, walk north past the Heritage Center to 117 South Fountain Ave for coffee, and keep going to North Fountain, all without moving the car again.

The South Fountain Historic District and Its Tours

The avenue's southern stretch belongs to the South Fountain Historic District. Visit Greater Springfield points visitors to the Westcott Center for Architecture and Design, at 1 South Limestone Street, which runs a Summer Tour Series of eighteen tours starting in late May and running through the summer.

Architects, historians, curators and local professionals lead those tours, according to the bureau, and the series includes walking tours, youth tours, happy hour tours and bicycle tours of areas including the South Fountain Historic District and Millionaire's Row. A morning walking tour is a natural reason to start with coffee on Fountain Avenue.

Outside the summer series, the district is still an easy self guided walk, and the Heritage Center's National Road exhibits give the architecture its context before you head out to look at it.

Beyond Fountain: Museum of Art and the Westcott House

Two more of Springfield's attractions, both promoted by Visit Greater Springfield, sit elsewhere in the city and pair well with a Fountain Avenue morning. The Springfield Museum of Art, at 107 Cliff Park Road, is described by Visit Greater Springfield as Ohio's only Smithsonian Affiliate art museum, with a permanent collection that includes work by Berenice Abbott, George Bellows and Charley Harper.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Westcott House, at 85 South Greenmount Avenue, is Wright's only Prairie Style home in Ohio, according to the bureau. It was completed in 1908, has been restored to its original appearance, and offers a 60 minute docent led tour Tuesday through Sunday.

Neither is on Fountain Avenue itself, so plan to drive between them and the walk. A day that starts with coffee at 117 South Fountain Ave on a Tuesday through Saturday can take in the Heritage Center on foot, then a Westcott House tour or the art museum in the afternoon.

Timing a Fountain Avenue Morning

The posted and reported schedules shape the best days for the walk. Un Mundo Cafe posts hours Tuesday through Saturday, with a 7 am start on weekdays and 8 am on Saturday, and a 3 pm finish on weekdays and 1 pm on Saturday. Scout's Cafe, per the News Sun, is open seven days a week, so a Sunday or Monday walk still has a coffee stop at the north end.

First Friday is the downtown evening worth building a day around. The News Sun's report on the Scout's opening tied it to First Friday running from 5 to 8 p.m., and a day that starts with coffee on Fountain Avenue and ends at First Friday uses the avenue from morning to night.

The Westcott House tours run Tuesday through Sunday, and the Westcott Center's walking tours run from late May through the summer. For a first visit, a Tuesday through Friday in summer lines up the most of the avenue at once.

Planning Help on Limestone Street

South Limestone Street, which the Performing Arts Center pairs with S. Fountain Ave. in its parking directions, holds the two offices that can help a visitor plan the walk. Visit Greater Springfield, the city's convention and visitors bureau, lists its office at 20 South Limestone Street, Suite 100, with a toll free line at (800) 803 1553. The Westcott Center for Architecture and Design, which runs the summer tour series, is at 1 South Limestone Street.

The Performing Arts Center's directions page adds a practical detail for anyone parking on this side: its east lot on S. Limestone Street sits north of the Springfield YMCA, and its northeast lot is at Clark State's Brinkman Educational Center. Visitors are asked not to park in the YMCA or library lots.

Between the bureau, the tour office and those lots, Limestone Street is the back door to the Fountain Avenue walk. Pick up a map, park once, and walk over to the coffee.

The Rest of Springfield's Coffee Map

Fountain Avenue is the downtown spine, but Springfield's coffee reaches well beyond it. Coffee Expressions sits at 1111 N Plum St STE 1 in north Springfield, where its own About Us page dates its opening to August 9, 2004. Strider Coffee Roasters is on Upper Valley Pike in west Springfield, at 1068 Upper Valley Pike. Scout's two other locations sit at 1399 Moorefield Road and 3660 E. National Road.

On the chain side, a 7 Brew drive thru stand operates at 2001 E Main St. It is noted only so the address is not confused with the independent shops.

Yellow Springs is a separate Greene County village with its own Xenia Avenue cafes, covered in its own Hillcane post. The two town hub post ties the whole map together.

Why the Walk Works

Fountain Avenue works as a coffee walk because the pieces sit so close together. Coffee at the north end at 32 N. Fountain Ave. Coffee on the Heritage Center block at 117 South Fountain Ave. A museum, a hotel and a performing arts center in between, free parking at the south end, and a historic district beyond it. Every one of those facts is on the record, and none of them requires a car once you arrive.

For a visitor, that means one parking spot and a full morning. For a resident, it means a downtown with two coffee counters on one avenue, on the same street as the city's museum and main stage.
